Google Play Catalog Access vs. Direct Aptoide Distribution: Developer FAQ

TL;DR

Catalog Access is discovery, not distribution. Since July 22, 2026, Google Play shares US app and game listings — name, icon, description, screenshots, videos — with enrolled third-party US stores. Aptoide Games was the first approved, on August 10.
Google Play still delivers the app. Installs from a Catalog Access listing complete through Google Play, and Google Play's service fee applies.
Your APK never reaches Aptoide. Direct Aptoide distribution is a separate model: you onboard through Aptoide Connect and submit a build.
You are enrolled by default. Manage it in Play Console under Settings > Catalog Settings.
The two can coexist — Catalog Access for US discoverability, direct distribution for global reach, your own listing and Aptoide billing.

Since July 22, 2026, Google Play has shared developers' US app and game listings with third-party Android stores enrolled in its Play Catalog Access Program. Aptoide Games was the first store approved, on August 10. If you never submitted your game to Aptoide and now see it listed there, this FAQ explains why, and what it does and does not change. What is Google Play Catalog Access?

It lets participating third-party US Android app stores access eligible Google Play listings: app name, icon, description, screenshots and videos. It is catalog syndication, introduced to comply with the Epic v. Google court order — not distribution.

Is Aptoide distributing my game?

No. Two separate models are in play:

Catalog Access: your Google Play listing appears on Aptoide Games; Google Play handles the download and installation.
Direct Aptoide distribution: you onboard through Aptoide Connect and submit your app, and Aptoide distributes it across its store network.

Why do I see my game there if I never submitted it?

Because enrolled stores can access eligible Google Play catalog listings, and developers are included by default. Catalog Access requires no Aptoide onboarding or integration on your side, and Aptoide has not received your APK.

Can I control which stores show my listing?

Yes. In Play Console, go to Settings > Catalog Settings and choose one of three options: publish all listings on all third-party stores, manage stores individually, or publish to none. You can change your choice at any time; if you make none, your US listings are shared.

When a user taps "Install", where does the game come from?

From Google Play. The download completes through Google Play on the same terms as a direct Play download, and Google Play's service fee applies. Aptoide Games provides the discovery surface; Google Play provides the app.

What changes if I distribute through Aptoide directly?

You onboard through Aptoide Connect, submit the build you want distributed, and Aptoide distributes that version across Aptoide and partner stores. That adds what syndication cannot:

A dedicated Aptoide listing, distributed through Aptoide and participating partner stores
Reach beyond the United States
Alternative billing and monetization through the Aptoide Connect billing SDK, subject to the applicable setup and commercial terms
A direct distribution relationship with Aptoide

Do I need a different APK for Aptoide?

Not for Catalog Access — no Aptoide-delivered APK exists there. For direct distribution you submit your build through Aptoide Connect, and depending on your setup you may need to account for signing, version codes and app integrity outside Google Play.

How does security work in each model?

They are separate. Catalog Access installs complete through Google Play. Apps distributed directly through Aptoide are delivered by Aptoide and subject to its security and validation processes.

Does this affect my existing Aptoide partnership?

No. Catalog Access does not replace or modify direct distribution. Your Aptoide listing, distribution arrangement and commercial terms stay separate from your Google Play Catalog Settings.

Can I use both?

Yes — they are separate paths and solve different problems.

Catalog Access: Google Play listing → Aptoide Games discovery → Google Play installation
Direct distribution: developer → Aptoide Connect → Aptoide and partner stores → Aptoide-delivered app

Catalog Access adds US discoverability at no cost and no integration, but creates no new billing or revenue channel. Direct distribution is what adds geographic reach and store-level monetization. Most developers keep both.
