Google Play Catalog Access: What It Means for Developers

Google Play Catalog Access: What It Means for Developers

TL;DR

  • From July 22, 2026, Google Play will share developers' US app and game listings — name, icon, description, screenshots, videos — with enrolled third-party US Android app stores, to comply with the Epic v. Google court order.
  • You are enrolled by default. Manage it in Play Console (Settings > Catalog Settings): publish to all stores, manage stores individually, or opt out.
  • Downloads of Play Catalog apps still complete through Google Play, and Google Play's service fee still applies. It's catalog syndication, not a new billing or revenue channel.
  • US-only. Participating stores must register as organizations and pass Google's security and policy review.
  • Direct distribution through alternative stores — your own listing, your own billing, global reach — is a separate model and is unaffected.

On July 22, 2026, Google Play starts sharing developers' US app listings with third-party Android stores through its new Play Catalog Access Program, and third-party stores become downloadable from within the Play Store itself. It's the most visible remedy yet from Epic v. Google, and it applies to every Play developer by default.

How the program works

Enrolled third-party US Android app stores get access to the Play Catalog — the listings developers submitted to Google Play — and can offer those apps to their users alongside their own catalogs.

When a user installs a Play Catalog app from a third-party store, the download completes through Google Play, on the same terms as a direct Play download, and Google Play's service fee applies. Stores cannot charge users for these installs or monetize them, and must tell the user the app comes from Google Play before the install starts.

In parallel, competing storefronts can now be distributed through the Play Store itself instead of relying on sideloading. Together, the two changes remove the biggest discovery barrier alternative stores faced in the US: they become one tap away, and they open with a full catalog on day one.

The legal background in one paragraph: a December 2023 jury found Google unlawfully maintained its app distribution monopoly, Judge James Donato's injunction ordered catalog access and third-party store carriage, and the Ninth Circuit upheld it on September 12, 2025. A March 2026 settlement between Google and Epic produced a revised injunction, and Google notified developers on June 22, 2026 — clearing the way for the July 22 launch. Because the remedy comes from a US court order, the program covers US users and US-targeting stores only.

What happens if you do nothing

Your US listings will be shared with enrolled third-party stores from July 22. Play Console now has a Catalog Settings page (Settings > Catalog Settings) with three options:

  • Publish all my app listings on all third-party app stores.
  • I'll manage all third-party app stores individually.
  • Do not publish any of my app listings on any third-party app stores.

You can change your choice at any time. Before deciding, note that third-party stores are not governed by Google Play's policies — they run their own. Google's enrollment bar does set a floor: public trust-and-safety policies, an IP dispute process, parental controls, and a malware distribution rate below 1% over a rolling 30-day window.

Syndication is not distribution

Play Catalog Access gives you incremental US shelf space at zero cost and zero integration work. It does not give you a new revenue channel, a direct relationship with the stores carrying your listing, or reach outside the US. That makes it a different tool from direct multi-store distribution:

If your reason for distributing beyond Google Play is margin or global reach, this program addresses neither. If it's US discoverability, it's free and already done.

What this means if you distribute with Aptoide

Nothing changes on July 22. Your apps on the Aptoide Connect network keep their own listings, billing, and revenue terms across partner stores reaching more than 250 million users worldwide. The Play Catalog choice is a Google-side setting, and for most developers there's little reason to opt out — extra US visibility costs nothing. Opt out only if brand, exclusivity, or partner-agreement constraints limit where your app may be listed.

Update (August 2026): the program is live, and Aptoide Games was the first store approved under it. If your Google Play listing now appears there, our Developer FAQ explains what that does and does not change.

Before July 22

Open Play Console, go to Settings > Catalog Settings, and make an explicit choice. If contracts restrict where your app can appear, check them now — from July 22, doing nothing means publishing everywhere.
